  • As believers in Messiah Yeshua this week's Parsha has many significant lessons. A lesson that I would like to focus on in this drash comes from Exodus 18:14. In this verse we find Yitro sharing some good advice with Moshe. As we read we find that Moshe has been spending all day long with lines of people with problems. He felt that because G-D had made him the leader of Israel that he had to make all of the decisions especially when it come to disputes between Israelites. His father-in-law upon seeing Moshe in this position said these words ..."What is this that you are doing to the people? ... It is interesting that Yitro didn't say "what are you doing to yourself" but rather what are you doing to the people. Yitro understood that as a leader Moshe had responsibilities to fullfill and by doing things that others could do he was robbing the people of his full time efforts by not focusing on what only he could do. This also had the effect of having everyone wait on Moshe for hours to settle things that could have been handled by others much quicker. Yitro's advice to Moshe was get help! Choose people that can work with you and do the things that can be done without you. Focus on the things that G-D has appointed only you to do.

This lesson is one that we all should take to heart. Every believer has giftings and talents that G-D has given them. We all have things that we have specific callings to do. However, many times we get so caught up doing side things that we get distracted from doing the important things. These distractions don't only hurt us but they hurt the entire kingdom. Because we are to busy to do what is most important. When we look at our lives and our priorities we must keep them in order. G-D is always first, Then Family, Then everything else. But as we look at the things we are doing for G-D, we must determine what of those things are our specific calling, and what of those things are a general calling. Anything that is a general calling we need to learn to ask for help with when we need it. If we do not ask for help not only do we suffer and our family suffer but our people also suffer. When this happens somewhere in the back of our minds we will hear the voice of Yitro asking us "What are you doing to the people"
